I don't understand why so many opposition MPs are so keen for Boris Johnson to resign as prime minister, so that he's replaced by another Conservative MP, presumably one who has until now approved of Boris Johnson's behaviour. How would some other Conservative MP be any better?

UK politics

@greytheearthling Less political capital, less entrenched, easier to dislodge or move against in the future

UK politics

@ada I'm not so sure. I think newly-elected leaders tend to have *more* political capital, since they've just recently won their party's support, and they're presumably not guilty of whatever toppled the previous leader. Johnson has not yet been in office as long as Theresa May was.

UK politics

@greytheearthling Also I think part of the reason Johnson lasted as long as he did is that no one else wanted to be the Brexit PM, and then the covid PM. A new person can (and no doubt will, whenever they appear) pretend that those things are over and have no ongoing bad effects. They'll benefit from being able to blame all that on Johnson. @ada

UK politics

@greytheearthling It's so tiring how politics is treated like an individual sport, like a fun game to watch, and nothing more.

UK politics

@bright_helpings I think perhaps, at least for people who aren't in politics, that's a symptom of having no ability to do anything *but* watch. So much power in this country is centralised in national government — much moreso than other countries — protected by a voting system that keeps power ping-ponging between the same 2 parties every 10-15 years.

UK politics

@greytheearthling Oh that's very understandable. But it's disappointing to see opposition MPs doing it too, as you say, because they do have more power than most of us.

It's frustrating that both of these parties are so committed to clinging on to their power, not reforming the electoral system to represent us better or empower us because that'd threaten their privileged positions.
