love how everything is about "sides" and even compromise is a side that everyone hates
just fuck all this fucking shit
the other day I had a weird issue with my NAS and my desktop only communicating at 100Mbps, and it turned out that one of my cat5e cables was, for some reason, only transferring at 100Mbps. I figured the cable was bad and set it aside for disposal.
Today I looked at it closer and it turns out it only has two twisted pairs inside, and is, therefore, not at all cat5e. Now I wonder where I got this cable from, because the sleeve markings sure look legit!
Out of curiosity I decided to see what happens if you plug a MacBook Pro into itself via USB-C.
It sees itself as being connected to power, and also as powering something else. And it also sees a Macintosh as being connected to itself.
I'm not sure whether to feel disappointed or relieved at how anticlimactic it was.
I also give entirely no fucks about Apple One or Fitness+.
Also I’m vaguely tempted to upgrade my watch to get the SPO2 meter. Seems especially useful these days. But I just upgraded my watch a year ago and that’s a lot of money just to get one nice-to-have feature.
I do wonder if the side TouchID button on the Air is a sign of things to come with the next iPhone. Or maybe they’ll finally borrow another thing from Google and put it on the back. The touch sensor placement is approximately the only thing I actually like about the Nexus 5X.
Also the feature differences between the Air and Pro are enough that I don’t mind having them.
New Air looks like it might be a bit faster but honestly CPU speed isn’t the big driving factor for me on an iPad, as long as its fast enough for drawing and basic video stuff (and the iPad Pro is plenty fast).
Plus, FaceID is still a lot nicer than TouchID, at least on an iPad which I’m mostly using indoors and maskless.
But, when I bought it I also got a pretty big discount on AirPods Pro which I’m enjoying and I think the iPad Pro vs Air cost difference is about the same as the AirPods discount. So it all works out I guess?
(Yes it’s price ratcheting and it’s annoying but whatever.)
I ordered a new iPad Pro several weeks ago and it’s been back ordered all that time. Now Apple has announced a new iPad Air which costs a lot less and also has pretty much everything the Pro does (that I care about) but doesn’t ship for another month. I’d have probably chosen a different device to buy if I’d known how this would be.

The silver lining to this is that I’m expecting COVID transmission rates to drop along the west coast, aside from people who are extremely macho about “just a little smoke”
I mean it’s almost certainly smoke and my air filters just can’t keep up with it
Most people are under the impression the ADHD is somehow a 'deficit of attention,' but it could equally and quite appropriately be framed as having higher than normal neurological requirements for stimuli.
When ADHD kids especially seem to bounce from subject to subject "mindlessly," what they're doing is not just randomly slopping through whatever without paying attention. They're running through lists of potentially stimulating subjects until they find one that suits their high requirements.
Smoke in the air makes me emotionally volatile. Like, just physically breathing it, independently of its tie to the global ecopolitical situation. During previous smoke events, back when you could just buy N95s, wearing one produced a noticeable improvement in my mood.
If you're in the smoke zone feeling cranky/depressed/anxious, consider that it might be doing this to you too. Clean your air as best you can and be gentle with yourself, yeah?
So I'm switching from Premiere to Final Cut Pro (because I'm tired of paying the ongoing Adobe Tax for software I don't use that much) and while FCPX has a lot that it does better than Premiere, it still absolutely sucks at doing motion keyframes. I guess if you want to do proper motion tweening you're supposed to buy Motion as an add-on. Ugh.
Seattle-based music/code/comics critter. Vaguely friend-shaped. Fibro-spoony, queer, ADHD, and anxious as heck. Handle with care.
A silly instance of Mastodon for queer folk and non-queer folk alike. Let's be friends!
