It's funny how many people cite "g" being "graphical" in why gif MUST be a hard g, but then go on and pronounce "vi" rhymes with "eye" or "sudo" like "pseudo."
@fluffy There's another timeline where they called jpeg the "JPEG image format" or "jif".
@fluffy I always thought 'sudo' was for 'Switch User and DO', since it lets you act as any other user (that you're authorized for)...
@dhasenan it’s either “super user” or “set user.” “su” is “set user” but sudo does things a bit differently.
@dhasenan anyway it’s the “do” part that people chronically mispronounce.
@fluffy I pronounce it with a hard g 'cause otherwise it just sounds like mediocre peanutbutter. -Annie
@fluffy also, char as in charmander vs. char as in character
@fluffy lib as in library or lib as in liberty
@fluffy but those other examples aren't acronyms
@ThisQueerBashesBack and anyway wouldn’t an abbreviation of a full word be even more of a reason to pronounce it the same as the part of the word t came from? “Do” should definitely be pronounced “do” not “dough”
Anyway my point isn’t that I care how people pronounce “gif,” I’m just pointing out that some of the most rabidly stalwart about that seem to also be really bad about pronouncing other things “wrong” without any self-reflection.
@fluffy Wait, it's not the roman numeral for 6?
@fluffy Giraffics interchange format? I could really use that.
("vi" is short for "visual" and "sudo" is short for "superuser do")
