Finally saw Detective Pikachu. It was fun. I guessed what the mystery of the dad was with the very first trailer and there were a whooooole lot of very convenient plot points but it was fun to see Pokémon in real life.

Okay looking back the plot was even worse than it seemed while my eyes were being filled with candy. I will post some extended thoughts although in a CW. I’ll try to stay away from any real spoilers but, you’ve been warned.

Okay so a bunch of folks have pointed out that the villain is an ableist trope. I didn’t really see it at first but, yeah, it pretty much shits on physical disability.

It’s also a bit weird that it starts to criticize capitalism and monopolies but then backs off and just makes it the isolated evil of a single rich technologist, ignoring the entire systemic issues that made his plot “work.”

Also during the parade scene you just KNOW that a bunch of Pokémon would be annoyed at humans dressing up as them. And earlier in the movie Pikachu even talks about how fucking weird it is that people decorate their rooms with abstracted renditions of Pokémon stuff.

It also seems weird that the villain’s plot was to force everyone to receive what he saw as a cure for all human troubles. You’d think that he could have cooperated with MewTwo and had people lining up to do it willingly - heck, he could charge even more money for it!

Also for a movie about a world-class detective there sure wasn’t a lot of detecting. And people seemed rather credulous of anything told or shown to them.

Tim was especially slow on the uptake about, well, EVERYTHING.

Anyway I’m still glad I saw it while it was still in theaters. There were a lot of great moments and it was a lot of fun even if the entire plot is pretty asinine.

Oh also, +5 points for at least a nod to having a diverse cast (and a mixed-race PoC in the lead role!), but -2000000 for bad racially-charged tropes, faux-Kanji typography, and a complete failure at the Bechdel test. (Did any of the women other than Lucy even have a name?)

Oh right, Ann Laurent, the tropey amoral research scientist, had a name.

And one of the female-presenting Pokémon has a surname, at least.

Oh, and there was the newscaster, and oh yeah Lucy actually talks to her about something OTHER than a man! Sorta. Technically. Arguably.

So it does barely, possibly, technically pass the Bechdel Test.

also actual spoiler for detective Pikachu

You’d think the bad guy would have thought through his plan to be tethered to mewtwo via neural link. Maybe his first order of business should have been to have mewtwo heal him, or just outright merge?

Or maybe he could have just asked mewtwo nicely to be healed since apparently mewtwo is god now

@fluffy Right?

There were times when I thought the characters figured it out, only to learn that they wouldn't get the obvious thing for ten more minutes.

@BestGirlGrace yeah and like you’d think an insurance adjuster would do anything to even indicate his background as an insurance adjuster, rather than it just being a throwaway joke about how boring a career it is.

Heck, you’d think insurance adjusting would be a pretty exciting field in a world where people have thirty-foot pet dragons!

Detective Pikachu spoilerish discussion

@fluffy Yeah, you'd think he'd have experience with this sort of thing. Insurance companies hire private investigators to look into claims!

Detective Pikachu spoilerish discussion

@BestGirlGrace also I wonder about the town Tim grew up in, like there was a great opportunity for him to NOT continue the constant degradation of small-town... whatever the country is called.

Hmm, even the original game doesn’t say what region it’s in. Weird.

Detective Pikachu spoilerish discussion

@fluffy The kid's dad doesn't even call him by his name. It's bizarre.

Detective Pikachu spoilerish discussion

@BestGirlGrace yeah and like, at the end it doesn't seem like he even remembers what the hell happened to him over the last few days or something

Detective Pikachu spoilerish discussion

@fluffy It was a very pretty and very frustrating movie to watch, and once was about the right number of times to see it.
