Among pseudo-ancient artifacts of the internet, I should point out the #tildeverse in particular. It's quite a throwback. Incidentally, the Fediverse is what led me to the Tildeverse.

Unsurprisingly, I fucked up the bar tape 🤦‍♂️ Oh well!

It was my first attempt, so it was kind of expected, and honestly the tape itself isn't as nice as I'd hoped so it's a good excuse to re-tape it sooner rather than later.

Updated version of an old sticker/flyer design, in case anyone finds it useful

Okay, it's time to tell new users a secret about Mastodon.

Mastodon is (whispers) part of a much bigger network 😮

Mastodon servers use an open standard called ActivityPub to talk to each other. That's how you interact with people on other Mastodon servers.

But, dozens of other federated networks also use ActivityPub, so (this is the good bit!) you can follow people on these other networks from your Mastodon account!

For example:

PixelFed (pixelfed.org) is a photo sharing network, here's a random example account @Iancylkowski

PeerTube (joinpeertube.org) is a video sharing network, with a p2p system that allows videos to go viral even on small servers, here's a random account @craftykat

BookWyrm (joinbookwyrm.com) is a social reading site, an open alternative to Amazon's Goodreads, here's a random account @mouse

Together, Mastodon and these other services form... The Fediverse :fediverse:

No photos just yet, but I've made good progress on the bike rebuild this evening. The frame has been rust-treated (I only lost one plastic straw inside the chainstay, woo!, the last parts - a Jagwire brake cable kit - finally arrived, and I've started putting some of the components back onto the frame.

Next up, get the confidence to (eeek) cut the cable outers, decide on bar and shifter placement, and (eeek again) wrap the bar tape...

New tires are looking pretty sweet, not gonna lie. Excited to take them for a spin when the rest of the bike is finished!

Also this place by itself is not better than twitter. It's the communities taking care of each other and treating people like people.

With each growth this is a test whether the communities are resilient enough to take care of newcomers.

So be excellent to each other, stick to your CoCs and let's weed out attention seekers and capitalism.

New people, welcome to Mastodon and the Fediverse!

Here's how to get started:

1. Find some people to follow over on @FediFollows, and through Trunk (communitywiki.org/trunk)

2. Find out your Mastodon/Fediverse address so you can share it with friends (mstdn.social/@feditips/1072482)

3. Invite people to join you on here by telling them to go to joinmastodon.org and click on "Get Started". It doesn't matter if they join a different server because the servers talk to each other (here's a bit more of an explanation mstdn.social/@feditips/1070214)

4. Find out what the Fediverse is (mstdn.social/@feditips/1070440)

5. Find out why Mastodon being on so many different servers/instances is a really good thing (mstdn.social/@feditips/1070837)

6. If you see anything nasty, you can report it to your friendly server admin (mstdn.social/@feditips/1065401)

7. You can (sort of) verify your account if you own a website (mstdn.social/@feditips/1062741)

#MastoTips #FediTips #Mastodon

A few years ago I made this flow chart of which Mastodon posts end up in which timelines!

So, you can see how each instance will have a different local timeline, and even a slightly different federated timeline - and you can see why the federated timeline moves so much faster than the local one, too.

This is why it's important to boost good posts and use hashtags - the fediverse is fragmented and harder to search by nature.

Just realised that one of the joys of spending less time on the birdsite and more time here will be actively choosing not to put it on my phone.

Queer Party!

A silly instance of Mastodon for queer folk and non-queer folk alike. Let's be friends!
