That day when this era of mass incarceration is over, the same day that our fuller economic mobility in the USA will begin, will be the day when we can hold our heads higher than ever before, when we'll feel safer and more light on our feet, when we will not have to fear the state as much. It will change us just as much as it will change this country.

I don't know what the United States will be like by the time mass incarceration ends, when cash bail is abolished, when cannabis possession is legal, when hard drugs are decriminalized, when civil asset forfeiture is curtailed, when police are forced to reach less for their guns and more for conflict resolution, and we abolish felony disenfranchisement, not to mention the death penalty and LWOP going the way of the dodo.
