a few months ago I was working on a lightweight BASIC interpreter for 8/32 bit microcontrollers for runtime customizability, but now I'm toying with the thought that actually, a really lightweight emulator for a processor GCC can target may actually be nicer for everyone involved

no, you don't get a REPL, but you get both a lighter interpreter and a proper powerful programming language. and you could still test locally instead of using a REPL
