I have had good friends who “queer” made uncomfortable because of the history of the word. They mostly got over it long before the end of the 90s, recognizing it’s important functional place in political struggle that directly benefited them.
Those guys (they were all guys) who did not die in the plague years are starting to die off now.
There is literally nobody left whose dislike of “queer” is not simply personal, or political opposition to an anti-assimilationist coalition.
